Venice… The sinking city. I had dreamt about visiting for so long – it had been on my bucket list of places to see, along with Rome, Paris, Valencia and Athens – and in August 2014 that dream finally came true. I got to spend 3 days and 2 nights in one of the most romantic cities in the world.
Venice possesses a melancholy beauty that I have not encountered anywhere else before. By night, with it’s lights reflected in the water and beautiful music from the numerous buskers floating upon the wind, it really is the perfect place to fall in love. However, these qualities also make it the perfect place to be depressed about love, should you not be lucky enough to find yourself falling just yet.
As with most European cities, it is best when explored on your own two feet. I spent my days blissfully walking down little cobbled streets, discovering treasure in hidden markets and marvelling at the beauty of the Moreno glass which is made in the area – as well as taking a multitude of photos!
If you are planning to visit Venice yourself, I would suggest trying a walking tour. The guides are full of useful and interesting information as well as being a fab source of suggestions on the best places to eat. Also, take a water-taxi to your hotel from the airport on arrival. These are expensive but it’s just magical to see Venice rise out of the water as your boat draws closer to the city.
As I was there when summer was drawing to a close, things were cooling down and I really enjoyed my trip. But it is worth mentioning that many of my friends that have visited in the height of summer have said that the water can have a tendency to smell a bit due to the heat. So I would definitely recommend a spring or autumn trip – this also means the possibility of slightly less tourists!
I hope this has given you a little inspiration for your next holiday, and, because words are never enough, here are some of my favourite shots from the trip.
