When I visited Finland, I would be lying if I said I knew what to expect. I had seen photo’s of gorgeous landscapes, stunning forests and vast lakes, but aside from that, I was clueless.
I had met Maria, who I was visiting, in high school. She was an change student and her and I got along really well pretty much from the first moment we met. I had promise on her last day in Africa that I would visit her home country one day. Little did we know it would take me 10 years to do so.
I spent a week in Finland and being someone who loves being outdoors, I loved exploring the forests near Maria’s home. However, as she expressed a dislike for the fact that apparently all anyone associates Finland with is forests, I have decided to first give you a little look at my day in Helsinki – a city I found to be clean and organised, as well as a little quirky.
We took a day to explore a forest near her family home. It was stunning. Our walk ended up being a rather long 19km which had me climb over 500 stairs up the side of a cliff to see a fort at the top – the views were so worth it!
